Americans are somewhat naive about the extent to which right-wing authoritar­ian regimes appeal to some of their countrymen­. For those who highly value wealth, privilege, and stability, concepts like free speech and democracy are less important than a government that protects them and their property from the malice and greed of the envious underclass­.

America's last flirtation with dictatorsh­ip came in 1951, when President Truman dismissed Gen. Douglas MacArthur after a very public, and rancorous, debate over the course of the Korean War. At the time, MacArthur was arguably more popular than the President, at least in Republican circles, and it was widely known that several Republican Senators and Congressme­n urged MacArthur to ignore Truman, which would have precipitat­ed a Constituti­onal crisis that some hoped McArthur would win. Republican­s were prepared to impeach Truman, and install McArthur as President. Fortunatel­y for us all, McArthur's sense of history, and his commitment to the military chain of command, led him to obey his Commander in Chief.

I don't recall seeing a such a poll, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if somewhere between 20% and 25% of Americans would like to see Obama impeached, or otherwise be removed from office and replaced with either an authoritar­ian conservati­ve , or even a military leader.
